Founded in 1824 by Drs. Edward Reynolds and John Jeffries as a one-room clinic to treat Boston's needy, the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary has earned an international

to medical research and education.
As a world renowned research institution, MEEI is known for:
- Discovery of the first hereditary cancer gene.
- The first diagnosis of rentinopathy of prematurity.
- Performance of the first cochlear implant in the New England Area.
- Development of two surgical procedures for Ménière's Disease.
- Development of a unique surgical method to restore speech, swallowing and normal
breathing in patients with paralyzed vocal cords.
