To compare the effectiveness of standard oral steroid treatment to a new treatment where steroid is injected into the middle ear.
We do not know if the benefits and side-effects of oral vs. injectable steroid treatment show one treatment to be superior to the other for patients with sudden deafness.
By randomly assigning sudden deafness patients to oral or injection treatment groups and comparing the results, we hope to answer this question.
You will undergo a screening evaluation by our Research Coordinator and Clinic Physician, and you will have a hearing test to determine if you are eligible to participate.
If you are eligible and you choose to participate, you will be randomly assigned to the oral or injection treatment group and will receive approximately two weeks of therapy.
You will have a series of four treatment visits and two follow-up visits over the next six months. At each visit you will be interviewed and examined, have a hearing test, and have blood and urine tests for safety monitoring.
Your participation is totally voluntary. You do not have to participate if you do not wish to do so.
Only the investigators conducting this study will know your identity. Any publication or scientific presentation of the study results will keep your identity strictly anonymous.
The results of this research study will be published in a medical journal and widely publicized in order to help future sudden deafness patients and their doctors make the best choices for treatment.
