A major research focus at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary is the development of prostheses to aid patients suffering from various balance disorders caused by vestibular deficits. Our research projects are designed to investigate the efficacy of balance aids and to bring these devices into clinical use both quickly and safely. Additional information is available about these prosthesis research projects.
The Jenks Vestibular Laboratories provide the necessary equipment and associated infrastructure to perform balance and vestibular research. Both laboratories were established, in part, through gifts from James and Evelyn Jenks. The laboratories are fully equipped with motion devices, systems to measure eye movements, data acquisition computers and other specialized test equipment for both research and diagnostic testing. Visit the following links for more details regarding each of these laboratories.
The Jenks Vestibular Diagnostic Laboratory provides clinical testing services and research activities.
The Jenks Vestibular Physiology Laboratory is a research laboratory.
Five faculty members in the Harvard Medical School's Department of Otology and Laryngology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary are engaged in balance and/or vestibular research as their primary research endeavor.
Richard Lewis, M.D. is an Assistant Professor at the Harvard Medical School and is the Medical Director of the Jenks Vestibular Diagnostic Laboratory. His research focuses on the vestibular and oculomotor systems, and includes studies with patients suffering from neurologic and otologic diseases. Dr. Lewis is also actively involved in the development of vestibular implants.
Daniel Merfeld, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at the Harvard Medical School and is the Director of the Jenks Vestibular Physiology Laboratory. His research focuses on how the brain interprets ambiguous sensory information and integrates cues from sensory systems. He also has a grant to work on the development of vestibular implants.
Steven Rauch, M.D.is an Associate Professor at the Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on the differential diagnosis of balance disorders. Meniere's syndrome is used as the model system for these studies. He also is working on the development of vestibular prostheses.
Conrad Wall, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at the Harvard Medical School and is the Director of the Jenks Vestibular Diagnostic Laboratory. His research includes development of techniques to assess and counter gait ataxia, studies of otolith ocular reflexes, and application of multivariate statistics to patient diagnoses. He also has a grant to work on the development of balance prostheses.
