Employee Benefits at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary

Our Benefits of Choice program allows our employees to choose the benefits that are the best and most cost effective for them. We also offer employees increased opportunity for tax savings through the Health and Dependent Care Reimbursement Accounts, pre-tax health and dental insurance premium payments and tax deferred annuities.

Our benefits package offers employees a choice of three health care plans, company sponsored life insurance and long term disability coverage. For the long term, we provide a non-contributory pension plan for all employees who have met the eligibility requirements, along with the option to participate on an individual basis in a tax-deferred annuity. Rounding out this package are paid holidays and vacations and other special programs. All benefits described below are governed by the official benefits plan documents and formal policies that are subject to change.

Vacation

Most regular full-time employees are entitled to a minimum of three weeks of vacation per year. Employees must complete 3 months of employment before vacation is credited to a vacation bank. Employees who regularly work 20 hours or more accrue vacation on a prorated basis. Employee's accrue up to a maximum of 4 weeks of vacation in their sixth year of employment.

Medical/Dental Coverage

On the first day of the month after an employee's date of hire, eligible employee may participate in one of the Infirmary's health insurance plans and enroll in our voluntary dental program. We currently offer Blue Cross/Blue Shield Partner's Plus/Blue Choice and two HMO's: Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Associated Health Plan.

We offer Delta Dental's Premier voluntary coverage for families and individuals. Health and dental insurance deductions are taken out of an employee's paycheck on a pre-tax basis. The Infirmary assumes a portion of the medical premium payment based on relative premiums for each plan.

Reimbursement Accounts

Reimbursement Accounts give our employee's a tax break by letting them pay for certain expenses with before-tax dollars. Doing so can be a wise choice that pays special benefits to employees. Contributions to these accounts are deducted from employee's pay before federal and Social Security taxes are withheld. By reducing their taxable income, staff can increase their spendable income.

One account allows employees to pay for uninsured health care expenses, including expenses for dental, vision, hearing care, physical examinations and prescription drug co-payments. There is another separate account employees can use to pay for certain dependent day-care expenses, such as care for a child under the age of 13 or elderly parents while employees are at work.

Life Insurance

After three months of employment, an employee regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week, becomes eligible for group insurance equivalent to one times their annual base salary at no cost to the employee. Employees also have the opportunity to increase their level of coverage based on their own needs. Low-cost, supplemental term life insurance is also available through payroll deductions.

Long Term Disability (LTD)

After completing three months of service, employees working 30 or more hours per week are eligible for free LTD coverage. LTD allows employees to continue to receive part of their income if they become seriously disabled and are unable to work. On the 91st day of disability, an employee would be covered for 60% of their annual base salary, to a maximum of $15,000/per month.
