MEEI - Medical Unit

The Medical Unit of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary performs a variety of functions, primarily in performing preoperative physical evaluations of patients prior to surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, including direct appropriate inpatient follow-up care postoperatively. The scope of service is confined to the specialty areas of Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and specialty areas of Internal Medicine. The department physicians are available on-call for emergent care 24 hours, 7 days a week. The Medical Unit also performs a variety of other services, including teaching, research and administrative responsibilities.


The Medical Unit also receives direct support from the Senior Medical Resident on-call from the Medical Services of the Massachusetts General Hospital, who provides emergency medical coverage to all patients at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Why do I have to see the Medical Unit physician before my surgery?

To make sure you are medically stable to undergo your surgery.


Why has the Medical Unit physician canceled my surgery?

Because your current state of health would put you at high risk for medical complications during your surgery while you are under an anesthetic.


Should I take my medications on the day of my surgery, and should I bring my medications with me to the hospital?

When you are examined by the Medical Unit doctor, he/she will give you instructions regarding your medications. Yes, it would be best that you bring your medications to the hospital with you.


What time should I arrive at the hospital for my surgery?

You should contact your surgeon's office, who will inform you when you will be admitted to the hospital.

How soon can I get a pre-op physical examination on one of my patients?

Immediately, if necessary.


How long does it take to process a patient through the Medical Unit, including laboratory testing and EKG?

Approximately one hour.


Will the Medical Unit physician and nurse practitioners follow my patient during their hospitalization at MEEI?

Yes.


Does the Medical Unit provide medical consultations in the evenings and on weekends?

The Medical Unit provides emergency medical coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.


Teaching and Research

The Medical Unit makes numerous contributions to the teaching activities of the Infirmary and of Harvard Medical School. The emphasis of the Unit's teaching program is on the medical care of the surgical patient. Members of the Medical Unit participate in formal teaching conferences with medical and nursing staff of the Infirmary. A great deal of teaching occurs in the setting of the medical consultation. A continuing education course on issues in Internal Medicine has been developed for practicing ophthalmologists.


Staff

Administrative responsibility for the Medical Unit is assumed by the Director of Clinical Services, along with the Medical Unit Coordinator. In addition to the Coordinator, the department's full complement of staff includes Nurse Practitioners, a Medical Secretary, and a Medical Accounts Representative/Secretary.


The nursing staff members are graduates of accredited schools of nursing and recognized nurse practitioner programs. They are licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and maintain certification by the appropriate nursing board. The department's Coordinator is responsible for the administrative functioning of the Medical Unit and works in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services and the Director of the Medical Unit.The staff includes Nurse Practitioners, a Medical Transcriptionist and an Account Billing Representative.
