Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary

Fellowship Program

1. Educational Objectives:
   The principal educational objective is to increase the individual’s overall exposure to clinical pediatric otolaryngology with a particular focus on those pediatric ORL problems that constitute a referral practice. The latter would include those congenital and acquired anomalies that require such surgical interventions as airway reconstruction, microtia repair, cochlear implantation, endoscopic sinus surgery and head & neck procedures. The fellow will play an active role in the consult service provided to the Mass General Hospital for Children relative to pediatric ORL issues of an infectious, traumatic or alternative emergent/urgent etiology.
2. Schedule:
   Outpatient clinic exposure would include those specialty/multidisciplinary clinics in which the pediatric ORL faculty participate, including Microtia clinic (Dr. Eavey), Hemangioma & vascular malformations clinic (Dr. Cunningham)Airway and voice disorders clinic (Dr. Hartnick).
3. Research Time:
   The first year of the fellowship will be primarily clinical. During this time, the fellow will be encouraged to develop a research project with the guidance of the faculty. If a candidate opts for a two-year fellowship, the second year will be primary devoted to either outcomes or basic science research activities.
4. Progress assessment:
   The fellow’s progress will be assessed by the Pediatric ORL faculty in individual and cumulative written fashion relative to the standards presently followed by the Department for residency and fellowship training. Annual review: Dr. Hartnick will provide an annual review summarizing the Pediatric Otolaryngology faculty’s impression of the fellow’s activities and progress.

6. The impact of the fellowship on the training of residents will be positive. The more complex operative cases of the service are performed by the pediatric ORL staff alone or with the help of senior residents from another service. This system would not be altered by the presence of a pediatric otolaryngology fellow. The fellow will serve as a tutor for the ORL-1 resident within the operating room where appropriate , and will work together with a senior ORL resident, with attending guidance, on complex cases.
7. Salary, Benefits:
   The fellow’s salary and benefits will be commensurate with his/her years of training and with that of the other MEEI fellowships. The fellow’s malpractice insurance will be covered by the Pediatric Otolaryngology faculty. The faculty will also support travel to a conference at which the fellow is presenting his or her research.
8. Supervision of clinical care:
   The fellow will be supervised in the operating room and the outpatient setting. He/she will not see patients independently and will not charge for his/her services at the MEEI.
9. Allocation of time:
   The majority of the fellow’s clinical time will be spent in the operating room, with the exception of specialty clinic and consultation service demands. A good faith attempt will be made to try to reserve one full day for research pursuits. Research time will constitute the vast majority (80%) of a second year if so chosen.
