The Harvard Otolaryngology Residency Program provides a well-balanced and complete training in otolaryngology in a variety of settings, including a specialty hospital for ophthalmology and otolaryngology (Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary), a specialty hospital in pediatrics (The Children's Hospital), and two general tertiary care hospitals (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital). In addition, the Department maintains active research laboratories in auditory physiology, otopathology, cochlear implantation, neurochemistry, laryngology, vestibular disorders, laser applications, voice disorders, molecular biology of head and neck cancer, image-guided surgery, and immunology of the ear, which provide an excellent setting for understanding the scientific basis and future of our specialty.
There are two separate tracks for residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, differentiated by time allotted for research training. The Clinical Track consists of one year of general surgery and four years of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The Research Track is a total of seven years training: one year of general surgery, four years in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and an additional two years devoted entirely to research training. This research block falls between the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years of training and is supported by an NIDCD training grant. We offer three PGY-1 positions on the clinical track and one PGY-1 position on the research track for each year.
The items needed are:
Applicants for both tracks will be interviewed at the same time. Any resident applicant may be a candidate for one or both tracks. You will need to obtain an ERAS number from the surgery matching program and their website for further information is www.aamc.org/students/eras/guideline/start.htm. The Harvard Residency Program will be participating in the NRMP Match this year, as are all Otolaryngology programs. The clinical and research tracks will be identified by two different numbers in the NRMP Program.
The one year of general surgical training in Otolaryngology prior to the start of training in otolaryngology will be done at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital or the Massachusetts General Hospital. The decision about placement will be made immediately following the Otolaryngology Match.
Those wishing to submit research papers/reprints in support of their application may do so by identifying the papers "Applicant for Residency" with their full name at the top of the paper and submitting it to ENT Education Office, 243 Charles Street, Boston, MA 02114.
Residency interviews for the Harvard Residency Program in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery will be held at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in early December. The interview format includes six interviews for each applicant, lunch with the faculty and residents, tours of the facilities at both the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Longwood campus, and ample opportunity for questions.
Completed application forms must be received from ERAS as soon as possible, but not later than October 15.
