Head and Neck Oncology, Skull Base, and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgical Fellowship - Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School

Fellowship Program

  1. Educational Objectives:
    The objective of the fellowship is to train academic head and neck oncologic surgeons with expertise in the management of all facets of oncologic ablative surgery, the approach and management of skull base neoplasms, and the reconstruction of the head and neck including local, regional, and free tissue transfer. The fellow will participate in our bi-monthly skull base conference as well as our weekly head and neck multidisciplinary clinic at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Clinically, we anticipate active participation in the work-up and management of head and neck oncologic patients, assistance in major head and neck ablative cases, and assistance in all microvascular and skull base cases. The fellow will also have exposure and training in hyperbaric medicine.
  2. Schedule:
    Clinic experience – 1.5 clinic sessions per week
    OR – 3.5 OR days per week
    Progress assessment: We would anticipate quarterly meetings of the fellow and preceptor to discuss performance and future goals.

  4. We do not anticipate nor will allow any adverse impact on residency training.
    The head and neck ablative procedures will continue to be performed by the residents with the fellow in an assistant/instructor role. We believe that the fellow will be a positive influence on MEEI with his/her role in the supervision of head and neck and skull base conferences and in the education of residents in both the clinic and in the operating room.
  5. Research Time:
    The fellow will have a half a day per week of research time and will participate in ongoing clinical and basic science initiatives.
  6. Salary, Benefits:
    PGY equivalent with appropriate benefits supported by the Division of Head and Neck Surgery, the Norman Knight Center for Hyperbaric Medicine, and the MEEI.
  7. Supervision of clinical care:
    The preceptors will supervise the fellow during clinical management.

Allocation of time: The clinical fellowship will be a full-time occupation.


Primary work location:
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Massachusetts General Hospital. The rotations will include time in the following units:

  • MEEI Pathology-Cytology/Endocrine Tumor Bank – Dr.William Faquin
  • The Children’s Hospital Biostatistics – Dr. David Zurakowski
  • MEEI Outcomes Unit – Dr. Richard Gliklich
  • MGH Sonogram-guided FNA Unit – Dr. Peter Mueller
  • MGH Thyroid Associates – Dr. Gil Daniels, Dr. Doug Ross
